Phil Ivey has been referred to as the number one poker player in the world by many of the top-ranked professionals. He was born in Riverside, CA and moved to New Jersey before reaching the age of 1. His grandpa showed him to penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, he was hooked on poker and wished to learn every little thing he possibly could about the game. He would tell his grandparents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. He did not allow the detrimental feedback from others destroy his dream of becoming one of the greatest poker players in the world.

He began competing intently after acquiring a false ID with the name of Jerome. He sharpened his game at the poker rooms in Atlantic City. The first few years for him were a learning experience and winning wasn't a common thing at the time. He became known at the 2000 World Series of Poker where he made 2 final tables and came away with his 1st WSOP bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the last table he destroyed quite a few of the well known professionals including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

He decided to take his skills to the next level and moved out west to Las Vegas. He continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Ivey credits his success to discipline and a continuing love for the game of poker. Phil states that he's learning every day and is incredibly abashed about his achievements. Phil admits to making mistakes every single session of poker and always aspires to improve.

Despite the fact that Ivey has won some big-time tournaments, he prefers winning cash games on a regular basis.
